The Wisconsin Title I Association recently announced the three recipients of its fifteenth annual statewide scholarship awards for high school seniors.  Each scholarship award was $1,500.  The three winning participants, selected from 43 applicants, were:

Nicole Bruhn, Marshfield, WI         Nicole is a senior at Marsheild High School and will be continuing her studies at UW-Stevens Point.  She plans on majoring in Physical Education to become a health and fitness coordinator for the physically and developmentally challenged.  Nicole has been active in Youth Service Learning, Cross Country, Track and Field, Mentoring, Spanish and French Club.  She received the Presidents Volunteer Service Award three years in a row.  In addition, she has been a Special Olympics coach, American Cancer Volunteer, Title I Teaching Assistant, member of the Marshfield Sports Booster Club, and even donated her hair to Locks of Love.  She states in her essay, “The skills I learned while in Title One have increased my confidence and made reading an enjoyable activity.

Ashley Houdek, Bryant, WI            Ashley, a senior at Antigo High School, will be pursuing a degree from UW Eau Claire in order to become a future Kindergarten teacher.  Ashely is a born leader as exemplified by her extensive list of offices she has held including: Keystone Club Vice-President, Student Council Secretary, and Vice-President of the Senior Class.  In addition, she has been involved in German Club, DECA, Key Club, highway cleanup, nursing home volunteer, Toys for Tots worker, and volunteered at local fundraisers such as pancake breakfasts.  Her volunteer efforts have not gone unrecognized as she was recently a Youth of the Year nominee for Boys and Girls Club.  Ashley's eleventh grade English teacher wrote the following:

"...there must be leaders within the student body that are able to inspire, entertain, and motivate the masses.  I see Ashley as that beacon which guides the school.  People seem to glow in her presence.  She helps them see the good in the world."

Jane Peasley, Black River Falls, WI            Jane attributes her assistance from the Title I program with enabling her to be successful in both her academics and her self-confidence.  In addition to being actively involved in volleyball, basketball, and track and field, Jane keeps busy with her 4-H Vice-President position, church youth group, FCCLA, peer educators, and volunteering at the local day care center.  Jane began her journey into an agri-business career by being actively involved all of her life in her family's dairy farm. She will continue that journey this fall at UW-River Falls majoring in Business Administration.  In her essay, Jane stated: “I want to be involved in the changing technologies that will continue to make farming a viable family business.  I want to invest myself in an industry that provides agricultural resources our society is dependent on.”

We congratulate these three future leaders and wish them all great success.
