    2008 Outstanding Administrator Award Winner

    Sherri Torkelson

Director of Instruction and Elementary Principal

    Forrest Street Early Learning Center

    Black River Falls School District

In her roles as district curriculum coordinator and elementary principal, Sherri combines professional expertise and leadership with a rare ability to interact effectively with her staff, students, other administrators and community.  Her philosophy of shared leadership, interest in the concept of Professional Learning Communities, and relentless pursuit of research-based practices allow her to promote optimal staff development and student achievement.

Sherri is a strong advocate for Title I programming and provided leadership in moving the Forrest Street Early Learning Center from a targeted assistance program to a school wide program.  The school wide program provides the flexibility needed to meet the diverse academic needs of the students.  Some of the initiatives that Sherri is responsible for bringing to the Black River Falls District include Four Block Literacy Model, 6 + 1 Traits of Writing, brain-based learning, technological applications, and Professional Learning Communities.  In addition, she has been involved in the implementation of PI 34.

Sherri is a hard working and energetic professional.  She would never expect anything of her staff that she is not willing to do herself.  She leads by example and encourages shared leadership to enhance individual strengths and promote excellence.  Our Title I program flourishes under her leadership.  She has the ability to make her staff feel valued and inspired.  And she does everything with the students’ best interest in mind.  It is a joy and privilege to work with Sherri.
